Estados Unidos llevó a cabo esta semana un nuevo operativo antidrogas en el Caribe que resultó en la destrucción de una presunta embarcación dedicada al tráfico ilícito y la muerte de las cuatro personas que viajaban a bordo, según informaron medios estadounidenses que citan a un funcionario del Departamento de Defensa.
La fecha exacta del ataque sigue siendo incierta. Mientras CBS News reportó que la acción ocurrió el lunes, The New York Times la ubicó el miércoles. En ambos casos, los periódicos se basan en declaraciones de una misma fuente del Pentágono.
Desde septiembre, Washington ha reforzado de manera significativa su presencia militar en el Caribe, con el despliegue de buques de guerra, aviones de combate y miles de efectivos. Estas operaciones se justifican como parte de una ofensiva contra el narcotráfico supuestamente originado en Venezuela y Colombia.
Con este nuevo incidente, las autoridades estadounidenses habrían destruido 21 embarcaciones en el marco de esta campaña, con un saldo reportado de al menos 80 personas fallecidas, cifras que han generado alarma en la comunidad internacional.
La ofensiva militar ha sido objeto de fuertes críticas por parte de la ONU y varios gobiernos. El Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas para los Derechos Humanos, Volker Türk, advirtió sobre “fuertes indicios” de posibles ejecuciones “extrajudiciales” vinculadas a estas operaciones.
Pese a ello, Washington ha dejado claro que mantendrá su estrategia. Esta semana, la llegada de un portaaviones estadounidense a la región marcó un incremento notable en los recursos militares movilizados.
En paralelo, el gobierno de Venezuela anunció el inicio de nuevos ejercicios militares en todo el territorio nacional, asegurando que responden a lo que calificó como “amenazas imperiales” por parte de Estados Unidos.
