(11 de Febrero, 2014).- El macho se le impone a la hembra, le da vueltas, la jala con su cola. La hembra responde a la provocación y lo sigue en señal de atracción.
Con corales como escenario, el macho y la hembra enroscan sus colas y en una danza en pareja, dan vueltas en un acto de conquista.
El apareamiento inicia: los dos cuerpos se posan uno frente al otro y unen sus dorsos para que la hembra pueda depositar aproximadamente mil 500 huevecillos a una bolsa adherida al cuerpo del novio.
El macho libera el esperma para fecundarlos a todos y así es como el caballito de mar queda embarazado: porta y alimenta a sus futuros vástagos durante la gestación… que ocurre en tan sólo seis segundos.
Entre 10 días y seis semanas después –dependiendo de la especie y la temperatura del agua-, el caballito de mar se prepara para dar a luz. La respiración aumenta, el color de su cuerpo cambia y luego de un gran esfuerzo corporal inician las contracciones. Segundos después las crías de 7 a 11 milímetros de alto salen nadando para incorporarse en su nuevo hábitat.
